ABOUT CHEN DUO

A voice shaped
by literature

Chen Duo was born in Shanghai in April 1939, with family roots in Huai'an, Jiangsu, and graduated from the School of Journalism at Fudan University in 1961. In 1958 he joined the Central Radio and Television Drama Troupe, becoming one of the first television professionals of the People's Republic of China.

Over six decades he has worked as actor, editor, reporter, director, broadcaster, photographer and voice artist — and in 1959 played the leading role in "A New Generation", China's first full-length television drama. From the 1980s he became a host on CCTV, presenting "The Yangtze", "The Grand Canal", "The Silk Road" and other landmark series. The 25-episode "The Yangtze" (1983), co-hosted with Hong Yun, pioneered the dual-host format on Chinese television and became a classic etched into a generation's memory.

Now in his mid-eighties, he still takes the stage — from the screen to live recital, carrying Chinese stories forward in a voice both sonorous and magnetic.

In television work, no single role matters more than another — what matters is simply this: do television, right up to the very last minute.
